Sonos S1-Only Products support in the Poconos

Sonos products made before about 2015 — the ZonePlayers, the original Play:5, the Bridge, and early Connect and Connect:Amp units — are limited to the older S1 app. They still play music, but they get no new features, and while one is on a system the whole system stays on S1. The usual fix is to replace just those units, or to split them onto their own system, rather than replacing everything.

How to tell

You probably have one if…

  • The Sonos app flags one or more products as S1-only or not compatible.
  • Products labeled ZP80, ZP90, ZP100, ZP120, or the original Play:5.
  • A Sonos Bridge — a small white box plugged into the router — which older systems needed.

What we see

What goes wrong.

  • The app keeps prompting about incompatible products.
  • New Sonos speakers cannot join the existing system.
  • Missing features that newer Sonos systems have.

Your options

What we would do about it.

Replace the legacy units

Swap only what is S1-only — usually a Port or an Amp — and move the whole system to the current app.

Split the system

Keep older units running as their own system and move everything else forward.

Start fresh

If most of the system is legacy, a new layout with current hardware may be simpler. We reuse speakers and wiring wherever we can.

Cost. A four-zone Sonos system with in-ceiling speakers typically runs $6,000 to $15,000 installed. A single deck or dock zone starts around $2,400. More on Whole-Home Audio

Questions

Sonos S1-Only Products questions

Something not covered here? Call (267) 719-3598 and ask.

Will my old Sonos stop working?

It still plays music on the S1 app. It just gets no new features, and it keeps any system it is part of on S1.

Do I have to replace everything to get to the current app?

No. Only the S1-only units need to go, or be split onto their own system.
