Lighting Control
Dimmers, keypads, and scenes that replace a wall of unlabeled switches with a few buttons that actually make sense.
Most lake houses have the same problem: a bank of six identical switches by the door and nobody — least of all a guest — knows which one does what. Lighting control replaces that wall with a labeled keypad. One button for Arriving, one for Evening, one for All Off at the door you actually leave from. The wiring behind the wall stays; what changes is how you talk to it.
You notice it when
- You walk in with an armful of groceries and hit one button.
- The dock and path lights come on at sunset whether or not anyone is home.
- Guests stop calling you to ask which switch is the deck.
- The house looks lived-in from the road all winter.
Scope
What a lighting control project includes.
Every proposal is written for the specific house. This is the shape of it.
- Lutron dimmers and switches on every load worth dimming
- Engraved keypads at entries, primary suite, and the great room
- Scenes tuned on site at dusk, not guessed at from a spec sheet
- Astronomic timeclock so exterior lights track sunset year-round
- Vacancy sensors in baths, laundry, and pantries
- App and voice control, with the wall always working first
Investment
Projects start at $3,500
A typical whole-home Lutron system in a 3,000 sq ft lake house lands between $8,000 and $20,000 installed, depending on how many loads get dimmed and how many keypads replace them.
Do you have to rewire the house?
Almost never. Lutron RA3 and Caséta use the existing wiring — we swap the switches and add a repeater. Rewiring only comes up when a circuit has no neutral in the box, and even then there are workarounds we carry on the truck.
What happens if the internet goes out?
Every keypad and dimmer keeps working. The processor is in the house, not in a data center. You lose remote app access until the connection is back; you do not lose your lights.
Caséta or RadioRA 3?
Caséta is the right answer for under about 20 loads and no keypad engraving. RadioRA 3 is the right answer for whole-home, engraved keypads, shade integration, and anything you want to hand to a Control4 or Josh.ai system later.
