Sonos Connect:Amp support in the Poconos

The Sonos Connect:Amp powers passive speakers — in-ceiling, in-wall, outdoor — on a Sonos system. Sonos replaced it with the Amp in 2018. Later Connect:Amps still work with the current Sonos app; earlier units are limited to S1, which gets no new features and can hold back the rest of the system. Replacing one with a Sonos Amp keeps the speakers and wiring exactly where they are.

How to tell

You probably have one if…

  • A Sonos box with speaker wire terminals on the back, usually in a closet or rack.
  • The label reads CONNECT:AMP, or ZP100 / ZP120 on the earliest units.

What we see

What goes wrong.

  • The app flags it as not compatible, or the system is stuck on S1.
  • The unit overheats in an unventilated closet or cabinet.
  • A zone that cuts out or no longer appears in the app.

Your options

What we would do about it.

Replace with a Sonos Amp

Same speakers, same wire, more power, and the current app. Usually a short visit per zone.

Fix the ventilation

Amplifiers stacked in a closed closet run hot. A rack or ventilation change extends their life.

Keep it on a separate system

For a zone you rarely use, an S1-only unit can run on its own without holding back the rest of the house.

Cost. A four-zone Sonos system with in-ceiling speakers typically runs $6,000 to $15,000 installed. A single deck or dock zone starts around $2,400. More on Whole-Home Audio
