Lutron RadioRA Classic support in the Poconos

RadioRA Classic — the original RadioRA from the late 1990s — was one of the first wireless whole-home lighting systems, and many Pocono homes still have it. It is no longer sold, replacement parts are increasingly hard to find, and it is not compatible with RadioRA 2 or RadioRA 3, so when it fails the path is a new Lutron system rather than a part swap. The wiring in the walls stays: a modern system goes in switch box by switch box.

How to tell

You probably have one if…

  • Dimmers and keypads with model numbers beginning RA- printed on the device behind the faceplate.
  • Master keypads with buttons labeled by room or scene, usually by the main entry.
  • Lighting installed roughly 1998 to 2010, before phone apps were part of it.

What we see

What goes wrong.

  • A dimmer fails and the replacement is unavailable or costs more than it should.
  • Master keypads that no longer control the rooms they are labeled for.
  • No phone app, no voice control, and no way to check the house remotely.

Your options

What we would do about it.

Replace with RadioRA 3

The direct successor for whole-home lighting, with engraved keypads, an app, and shade integration. Installs in the existing boxes.

Replace with Caséta

For smaller houses and cabins, Caséta covers the same rooms for less, also without new wiring.

Keep it running for now

If only one device has failed, a spare can sometimes keep the system going. We will tell you how much runway that buys.

Cost. A typical whole-home Lutron system in a 3,000 sq ft lake house lands between $8,000 and $20,000 installed, depending on how many loads get dimmed and how many keypads replace them. More on Lighting Control

Questions

Lutron RadioRA Classic questions

Something not covered here? Call (267) 719-3598 and ask.

Can RadioRA Classic dimmers work with RadioRA 2 or RadioRA 3?

No. They use a different radio system and cannot be mixed. Replacement means new dimmers and keypads, installed on the existing wiring.

Does replacing RadioRA mean opening walls?

In almost every case, no. New dimmers and keypads go into the same switch boxes on the same wiring.
