Control4 HC-800 & HC-250 support in the Poconos

The HC-800 and HC-250 were Control4's main controllers in the early 2010s, and a lot of them are still running Pocono homes. They are end of life: they can be brought partway forward but will not run the latest Control4 OS, so newer apps, remotes, and device drivers gradually stop working with them. For most houses the right move is a controller swap to a current Core, which usually keeps the wiring, keypads, and speakers and takes about a day of programming.

How to tell

You probably have one if…

  • A controller labeled HC-800 or HC-250. The HC-800 is the larger unit, usually in an equipment rack or closet.
  • The HC-250 is a small box, often found behind a TV in a secondary room.
  • The house was built or renovated with Control4 somewhere around 2010 to 2016.

What we see

What goes wrong.

  • The Control4 app on a newer phone will not connect, or keeps asking for an update the system cannot take.
  • A new TV, streaming box, or thermostat has no driver that works on the old OS.
  • Remotes drop off and need to be re-paired.
  • The controller slows down or locks up until someone power-cycles it.

Your options

What we would do about it.

Stabilize it

If the system does what you need, we back up the project, get it into your name, and fix what is broken. A reasonable stopgap, not a plan for the next decade.

Swap the controller

Replace the HC with a current Core controller and reprogram. Wiring, keypads, and most connected hardware stay. This is what we recommend most often.

Rebuild around Lutron and Sonos

If the system was mostly lighting and music, a Lutron and Sonos build can be simpler to own than a new Control4 project. We price both and tell you which we would pick.

Cost. A system assessment and takeover starts at $450. Most rescues land between $1,500 and $6,000; a full controller replacement with reprogramming runs higher. More on Control4

Questions

Control4 HC-800 & HC-250 questions

Something not covered here? Call (267) 719-3598 and ask.

Can an HC-800 be upgraded to the latest Control4 OS?

Not all the way. It can be brought forward to a point, but Control4 has left it behind for the newest releases. If you want current apps, remotes, and drivers, a new controller is the path.

If I replace the controller, do I have to replace everything else?

Usually not. The controller is the brain; keypads, dimmers, amplifiers, and speakers generally carry over. We confirm device by device during the assessment, before you spend anything.

My Control4 dealer went out of business. Can you still work on an HC-800?

Yes. Orphaned systems from this era are a large part of our Control4 work. We start with a takeover: find out what is installed, get the project into your name, and give you a written recommendation.

Do you service the Control4 HC-800 & HC-250 in my area?

Yes. We are based in Pocono Pines and work on Control4 systems throughout the Poconos and Northeastern PA, including Pocono Pines, Lake Naomi, Lake Harmony, Lake Wallenpaupack, Hawley, Lake Ariel. Call (267) 719-3598 or book a walkthrough.
