Control4 HC-300, HC-500 & HC-1000 support in the Poconos

The HC-300, HC-500, and HC-1000 were Control4's first-generation controllers, sold in the mid-to-late 2000s. They are obsolete: they stopped at the OS 2 line, cannot run current Control4 software, and are no longer made. If one still runs your house, plan for replacement. The useful question is how much of the rest of the system can be kept, and the answer is often more than people expect, starting with all of the wiring.

How to tell

You probably have one if…

  • A controller labeled HC-300, HC-500, or HC-1000.
  • Control4 was installed when the house was built or renovated, roughly 2005 to 2010.
  • The touch screens are an older, thicker generation, and some may no longer respond.

What we see

What goes wrong.

  • No current Control4 app supports it, and remote access is often gone entirely.
  • The controller has failed and there is no like-for-like replacement.
  • Nothing new — TV, cable box, thermostat — can be added to the system.

Your options

What we would do about it.

Replace the controller

Move to a current Core controller and reuse what can be reused. Some first-generation keypads and dimmers will likely need replacing at the same time.

Rebuild around Lutron and Sonos

For houses where the system was mostly lighting and music, this is often the simpler long-term answer. The wiring in the walls is reused either way.

Leave it until it fails

If what still works is enough, that is a legitimate choice. We can document what is installed now so the eventual replacement is quick and quoted in advance.

Cost. A system assessment and takeover starts at $450. Most rescues land between $1,500 and $6,000; a full controller replacement with reprogramming runs higher. More on Control4

Questions

Control4 HC-300, HC-500 & HC-1000 questions

Something not covered here? Call (267) 719-3598 and ask.

Can an HC-300 or HC-1000 be upgraded?

No. These controllers cannot run Control4 OS 3, and there is no upgrade path on the hardware itself. Replacement is the only way to current software.

What can I keep from a first-generation Control4 system?

Wiring nearly always, speakers and amplifiers usually, and some lighting depending on its age. First-generation keypads and dimmers are the most likely parts to need replacing.
